Disabled BBC presenter 'scaring' children

” A disabled CBeebies presenter has been the victim of a disturbing campaign after parents complained that she was scaring toddlers. They claimed that host Cerrie Burnell  –  who was born with one arm  –  is not suitable to appear on the digital children’s channel.Miss Burnell said: “It can only be a good thing that parents are using me as a chance to talk disability with their children. It just goes to show how important it is to have positive disabled role models on CBeebies and television in general.”

Michael Carrington, Controller of CBeebies – “It’s a big ask to entertain millions of children every day. Cerrie is warm and natural and we think that in time all mums and dads and children will love her as much as we do”.”

This report highlights how British society is still yet to come to grips with disability; the media lacks representations of disabled people and it appears that the main reason for this is that many audiences would prefer to avoid watching depictions of disability as it forces them to confront an issue they would prefer to ignore. Perhaps representations are changing however; the C4 comedy, ‘Cast Offs’ for example, tackled ‘disability’ head on, featuring real disabled actors (shock horror!) and jokes about disability (gasp!) – http://www.channel4.com/programmes/cast-offs
